  • One of the oldest neighborhoods in Philadelphia, originally settled by Swedish immigrants in the middle of the 17th Centruy - prior to William Penn. Originally a fishing and agricultural community, in the 18th Century Fishtown emerged as a major industrial, chemical and ship building center. Manufacturing jobs began to erode after the Second World War, although some small light industry remains. It is now primarily residential, and emerging as a neighborhood closely connected to center city Philadelphia.
