The originally Romanesque castle of considerable importance, was rebuilt on a monumental Baroque chateau, situated on a ridge above the left bank of the river Labe in the center of Roudnice nad Labem. The castle was founded already in the late 12th century by Prague's bishops They kept it very well because of its great importance.
Roudnice Castle has a rich past and long-standing mystery. Tthere lived and worked many prominent alchemists and alchemy have blossomed in their hands as well as the Prague Castle. At present the former bishop's castle has been used as Military music school with in the neighborhood former Capuchin monastery and church of St.. Wenceslas.
The castle has 180 rooms and other rooms. Prince of Lobkowicz family amassed there an extensive library and collections of musical instruments, weapons, faience, porcelain, furniture, and extremely valuable art gallery, but all the collections were evicted from the castle.
