Ponnambala Medu is the spot of illumination of man-made light, Makara Jyothi. A legend (deeparadhana) or a myth had it that the light was a divine-creation and could be seen at Sabrimala temple 4 km away. However, in a case before it, the supreme court of India asked for an affidavit from the Sabrimala Trust whether it was divine or man-made and the Trust was forced to declare that it man-made and there was nothing divine about it. The myth is now dispelled and the truth is known that the liht is man-made and not divine.
