 apartment building  Add category

A trio of 3-story residential buildings originally completed in 1839 as a row of five houses. No. 59 remains closest to its original general appearance, since it retains a roof cornice added somewhat later, while the other two have been raised a few feet by the addition of roof parapets. Nos. 57 & 59 have window cornices, which have disappeared at No. 55. No. 57 is clad in red brick, while the two flanking buildings have white-painted brick. The ground floors are occupied by S.R. Gambrel interiors, Arthur's Tavern, and Marie's Crisis Cafe. Arthur's Tavern is New York's oldest jazz club, opened in 1937. Charlie Parker played here regularly.
