archaeological site, Ancient Greece

The ancient Greek temples of Mycenae were located at the summit of the acropolis, overlapping part of the earlier site of the Bronze-Age palace complex (presumably the palace's private and servant quarters and storage magazines). They were dedicated to either Hera or Athena (or possibly both, especially if more than one shrine was located on the site). The erosion of the hilltop has left little of the classical buildings, while they, in turn, have destroyed the remains of the Bronze-Age ones.
