The fertilizer plant was abandoned midway even before the production started way back in 1973. The then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi had performed bhoomi pujan for the plant, for which 900 acres of land was earmarked and allotted. Equipment worth about Rs 33 crore was purchased and installed and 475 workers were also recruited. However, the project was shut down. Those in the know of things point out that now only 300 acres of land is left for fertilizer plant as the remaining has been diverted for other purposes in the last 40 years.Mahto approached the ministry of fertilizers and chemicals after he came to know that FCIL has decided to revive the closed plants at Talcher, Gorakhpur, Barauni, Sindri and Ramagundam.
