On July 15, 1914, the 109 ft passenger steamer Silver Spray ran aground on Morgan Shoal and broke up during the attempted recovery. It was taking mostly University of Chicago students back to Jackson Park after an excursion. No lives were lost. The portion here, said to be the boiler, lies just underwater and is visible from shore on stormy days.
