The African Union (AU), a successor of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) is a continental organization consisting of all African independent nations, with the exception of Morocco from the mainland Africa, and is headquartered in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa. The new AU headquarters complex, a 20-story office tower and a spherical conference center was inaugurated on January 28, 2012. It is located in Kirkos Kifle-ketema ('Kirkos Sub-city') about 8km (5mi) northwest of Bole International Airport.

On July 9, 2002 the Organization of African Unity (OAU) transformed itself into the African Union (AU). The OAU was founded on May 25, 1963 at the sinning of its charter by the leaders of the original Africa's 32 independent nations at a conference in Addis Ababa. It was formed in aims to create unity and solidarity among African nations in struggles against colonialism and apartheid.

The AU has 54 member states, and the only country that is not in the union from the mainland Africa is Morocco. It withdrew from the OAU in 1984, as a protest against the inclusion of Western Sahara into the union as a member state.
