The National Palace, formerly known as the Jubilee Palace (እዮቤልዩ ቤተመንግሥት) was the last residence of Emperor Haile Selassie I. Built in 1955, to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Emperor's reign. After giving his original residence, the Genete Leuel Palace (ገነተ ልዑል ቤተመንግሥት) to be used as the nation's very first university (today's Addis Ababa University of Sidist Kilo), the Emperor moved his home to the new location, the Jubilee Palace, and it remained as a Royal residence until the Ethiopia's military regime known as Derg came into power and abolished the monarchic system of governance, in the 1970's.
