The Northern Pacific Railroad completed their mainline during 1883, linking St. Paul with Seattle and Portland, and crossing the Yellowstone River on this bridge.
Montana Rail Link took over operation of this line in 1989, and continues to use this bridge to provide freight service to Southern Montana.
Amtrak also used this bridge for their North Coast Hiawatha passenger train, which stopped running through Livingston in 1979.
There were a total of 10 railroad lines built across the Yellowstone River, of which 5 remain in use.
