The Northern Pacific Railroad constructed a 23 mile branch line to provide service to the town of Wilsall, which included this bridge over the Yellowstone River. Burlington Northern took over operation of the line in 1970, and continued to serve Wilsall until abandoning this line during 1985.
There were a total of 10 railroad lines built across the Yellowstone River, of which 5 remain in use.
