Adilman Building (Saskatoon)

Canada / Saskatchewan / Saskatoon
store / shop, cafe, patisserie, home furnishing store / interior decoration retailer

Adilman's Department Store was a cornerstone of the 20th Street shopping district from its opening in 1927 to 1975. It not only survived the hard times in the 30s but continued to grow and expand over the years. This interesting Art Deco / Streamline Moderne building, as it now stands, was the result of a renovation in 1949, although the core of the building dates to 1912. Some Saskatoon old-timers may remember the Bargainteria Basement that was added in 1939 or may remember "Popcorn Pete" who sold popcorn from a vending cart on the corner beside Adilman's from the 30s to the 60s.

After the closure of Adilman's, the building served a number of tenants. During the 1990s it was the home of the Saskatoon Antique Emporium, and later a bingo hall. The building also served as a temporary home for the Saskatoon Farmers' Market, until its new permanent location on 19th Street was completed.

The current building tenants are Anthology Home Collection, an interior design store and offshoot company of Blossoms, a flower shop; and Little Bird Patisserie & Cafe, a French-style bakery and coffee shop.
