Alvin Hamilton Building (Regina)

Canada / Saskatchewan / Regina
office building, national government / government

Former site of the City Hall
The 1908 Romanesque Revival City Hall on 11th Avenue between Rose and Hamilton Streets provided facilities for civic government but also contained a large audience chanber, used for public lectures, balls, theatricals and indeed boxing matches.

In an ill-conceived effort to revitalise the city centre it was demolished in 1965 and replaced in 1968 by a now-failed shopping mall, the Midtown Centre. It was renovated in the late 1980s with some success to become the Galleria and head office of Scotiabank. The mall has since closed and the entire building has been taken over by the federal government for office space.
