  • Before Vietnam this used to be the home of the 7th Marine Regiment and the 1st Tank Battalion.
  • L/CPL Evans, be happy, when I was in C 1/11 there was no PX or Taco Bell!
  • Was in Golf Co, 2/7 in 63-64. Nice looking base at that time. Had a mountain at the edge of the base nicknamed "Sheep Shit". We used to have to hike up it, and even in full combat gear as punishment for some minor (to me) infractions.
  • I recall two "mountains" -- "big agony" and "little agony". Same drill though, sometimes up and down with a full footlocker. Was there for AIT in '57.
  • HOOORA DEVIL DOGS LEGAL; PLATOON
  • I THINK WE CALL THAT SHEEP SHIT NOW
  • Semper Fi Marines MTM Company
  • I was in MTM for 3 years. Only had a small PX.
  • I can still smell the licorice in the air and the dust from running PT through the tank trails... Yes, I recall running up "Sheep Shit" a time or two. It felt more like Mount Mother@#%&!* at times though! A 1/11 Marine
  • I was there in 1969 with staging battalion getting troops ready for Viet Nam.
  • September 1968 was a long time ago. I forgot the name of that hateful thing called Sheep Shit til you guys reminded me. Thanks...I think. Gotta say, the worst USMC chow hall I ever saw was in Las Pulgas. Used to have to double time to breakfast. When we got there we'd go through the chow line, dump the slimy eggs and go outside for a smoke. PX? Taco Bell? Uhhh, yeah sure. C-rats if we were lucky. Semper Fi. RVN 68-69.
  • I was there from 83-85 in the 3/11 FDC (S-2). Served with a good bunch of jarheads. Later served on Okinawa, Korea and Hawaii. Good times mostly.
  • I went thru there with staging battalion 4027 in Dec.66, I remember road with stream running across it, we would go I was out at Las Pulgas for staging battalion in Dec of 66, I was with staging batt.#4027, and remember the hill's very well, I also recall the road leading in had a stream bed running across it I believe.I also recall taking bus to Ocean Side ....the ride back really sucked after drinking.... arrived in Nam in early Jan.67.
  • I was at the 43 area dispensary for 1 1/2 years during '73-'75 as a Navy Corpsman. Avoided the chow hall like the plague, but actually enjoyed serving with the USMC. Looking back, I wish I'd had my s#%t more together and made a career of it.
  • Was there 89-93. Sheep-shit was a bastard. Ran it plenty of times. One side long and steep the other side straight up. Remember seeing the shepherd with the sheep grazing on it. Also tank trails. No taco smell though and stayed in the barracks from the 60's. Hated waiting on that bus to get off the base!
  • we cant even run in the mountains at this base, half on the buildings are condemmed but still being used
  • I was there frm 95-99 and there was no taco bell. the best chow in camp was at the e club while throwing a few back, and oh yes the dreaded friday mrng pt after being out thursday night, 3/4 of the plt smelled like they worked for the Anhauser Busch brewery. Ahh good times!! Semper Fi Devil Dogs, Ooh Rah!!
  • Was there in 81-84 remember running 'Sheep Shit', wasn't much fun at all. But had some good times as well getting to know some great Marines back then. Echo 2/11. Had a px and a chow hall (they served fried rabbit)wasn't too bad. Lake Las Pulgas........more like a small pond. Would like to go back one day to see what it looks like now.
  • Back in 69, Camp Las Pulgas was the home of 13th Marines, 5th Mar Div. 2/13 and 3/13 were at Pulgas. 1/13 was deployed to Vietnam. Pulgas was also where every Marine who went to Vietnam passed through, Staging Battalion. They were billeted in quonset huts that use to line the road that led to the Las Pulgas Gate some miles east of Camp Las Pulgas. The quonset huts are long gone today. Staging Bat. was relocated to Okinawa during 1970 I believe. Back in 69 there were two PX's, an EM Club, NCO Club and SNCO Club. The chow in the mess halls was pretty bad. There were two mess halls, one for the 13th Marines and the other for Staging Bat. The best chow was found at the vending machines that dispensed hot food. I still remember the chili dogs.
  • I was stationed here in 78-79. One of 12 WMs. It's where I met my husband. Las Pulgas (according to the book Flags of Our Fathers) was where Marines trained for the landing at Iwo Jima. I hope they got better chow than we did. The best options I found were the eclub or the roach coach.
  • i was in india co 7th marines in 1960. my co was captain wesley h rice my plt co was lt sarvi.
  • I got there as they were finishing the new red roof barracks, the chowhall had moved down the road, the little eclub had a pizza hut. Before i left there they built a new px next to the parade deck. Most of the buildings contained asbestos but were still in use. We ran sheepshit daily and it sucked. They had a new gym up next to the eclub. The chowhall was far better than anything on camp lejeune. I miss that mongolian bbq it was so good the field grades were bringing spouses and having meetings there.
  • I was with C btry 1/11. In Sept. of 1976 we moved from the OLD barracks/the ones with the head in the middle of the barrack to the HOTELS. That was the name we gave the new barracks there are 2 sets of them that you see as you are heading out of Las Pulgas going into town. The middle mess hall was used as a SNACK mess hall, they just served hot dogs and hamburgers, fries etc...the only mess hall that was used for breakfast, lunch, and dinner chow was the one at the south end. I pics. of the place now and so much has changed. Alot of good memories and friends, Cesena,Shoemaker,Haggar,Ayler,Sarff,Schrum,Flake,Clark,Anderson and the list goes on. That place is my home away from home. Semper Fi
  • TACO BELL???? Christ you guys have it soft. When I was there it was a PX and chow hall. Mornings were started with hundreds of trainees dropping their gear on the pavement, chowing up, and off to training. Damaged 6 by's, tanks, and other field gear were being transported throught the base, MCAW ElToro was practicing the bombing runs at the end of Basilone Road, where, on the other side of this same roadway, grenade training would be occuring. Night time would show tracers lighting up the night sky, and not a day went by without our base sounding like a war zone. Taco Bell? Oh please, spare me.
  • I was with Fox Battery 2/11. Best time in the Marine Corps.
  • I finished my enlistment up at MTM Co. In the summer I was PMI and remember waiting at that chow at 4 am to pick up marines in a deuce and half to take them over to the armory to draw weapons. We would snap them in for a week and then off to the range for live fire. My day would typically end at 9:30 am after turning weapons back in. Summers were nice as I remember.
  • I was with Alpha Battery 1/11 1985-1987, did a Westpac too. Those LBFM's had me going over in PI!!! OOH RAAAHHH!!!!
  • I served at area 43 for 2 years as MOS (3531) truck and heavy equipment operator in 1973-1975. It was a boring time to be a Marine due to the Vietnam war coming to an end and low to no interest from command for training fresh Marines that were just coming in to that particular area. Many times we had to hide all day due to the lack of decent command and literally nothing to do. The use of drugs and party hearty attitude seemed to be the only thing to do on a small camp like Las Pulgas. Putting all that aside,, I am very proud of my service in the Marine Corps... Semper Fi !!!
  • Was 0847 with CWO5 Matthews good times wonder how everyone is doing that was there with me running up sheep shit oohra live in Gray, Me. Wife has face book Denise Perkins old friends contact me.
  • Yeah! I left Las Pulgas to go to Camp Del Mar in 1992. I do remember Cpl. Arredondo. Seems the motorpool has changed. No more quanset huts at the back of the motorpool. That's where all us Motor-T guys used to work under Gunnery Sergeant Morales. Hope he is doing well. And 'Hello!' to all the guys of Alpha 1/11. Hope you're doing great. Corey...
  • Artillery School..Dec '66 I think was at Las Pulgas. I was transferred to 4.2 Mortars (W/2/11) and went to Nam attached to BLT 1/5. Anyone confirm exactly where our 4.2 Mortar platoon during Jan-Feb 1966? My memory need a kick start. I was trying to locate our barracks on the map above but I might be way off here. Thanks Marines....SF
  • Re: Cpl Phelps comment, as I mentioned above I was at Las Pulgas back in 69. As Cpl Phelps mentioned aircraft from MCAS El Toro use to make bombing runs just east of Basilone Rd, I remember watching Marine F-8 (Crusaders) making strafing runs with their 20 MM cannons and making steep dives while firing air to ground rockets. Kind of the daily entertainment back then. Las Pulgas was extremely busy back when Staging Battalion was there. They also had an outdoors movie theatre back then, kinda like a drive in movie theatre with out the cars.
  • C 1/11 K 1/11 & A 1/11 1975 - 1979 - Lot of familiar names here. Sgt Phillips, Wayne Therien, Bob Bratton, Shriver, Lege crazy cajun, and Gunny D.
  • Hey Eric Schwab...not sure it you remember me Jim Kubiak C 1/11 Was At Las Pulgas from Oct. 1975 until July 1979. I still keep in touch with a few of the guys Ed Cesena and Danny Ayler, Brian Shoemaker and a few others. my email is CAMSSJL8@aol.com. I recognized your name right away. Hope life has been treating you well.
  • PFC in 3/11 from '84-'85; MOS 2512. Tight outfit back then, but the "Holiday Inns" were "da Bomb"! Semper Fi!
  • I spent a year at Camp Las Pulgas, (1961) in 81 mm Mortars Platoon, 1962, shipped out to Okinawa and Batallion Landing Team afloat (best duty on the U.S.S. Boxer (a helicopter WWII carrier) for 18 months and then back to LasPulgas again. And yes, I clearly remember scrambling up "Old Sheep Shit" with an 81mm barrel on my shoulder! The pain was something else. Open barracks, food sucked, lost weight, did my job, glad to get out... went to school, became a doctor...but am still a Marine "semper fi".ooh! aah!
  • Spent two tours there with 3/7 during the period 1960-64. The hill was called Sheepshit then. First Tanks occupied the quonsets. Revisited there in 1989 and knew things had changed a lot: the grinder had been paved and spotted a macrame flowerpot holder dangling from the ceiling of my old squad bay. Also a much expanded exchange with TAKE OUT BEER!
  • I joined the 7th Marines at Las Pulgas in November 1956 and served in Regimental HqCo., until May 1958, when released from active duty. Lots of Korea vets still in when I arrived. As I recall the 7th Marines got back from Korea in 1955 and Las Pulgas was their home. We were quartered in what appeared to be newly constructed concrete, 1-story barracks with two squad bays separated by a head. Pretty spartan quarters, no central heat or air, just open windows in the summer and with an oil burner for the winter months, but better than the Quonsets at San Onofre (tent camp 2).
  • Was stationed at Las Pulgas with H&HS Co., 3/11. Was an 0431. Barracks were of the single-story with the head in the middle variety. Mine was next to the parade deck, near the chow hall. Two chow halls, but only one operating at any given time (mainly the one near Pulgas Rd.). Chow was excellent, I thought! F-4s on bombing runs. Tanks and amtracs kicking up dust running along the wash across Pulgas Rd. from the Bn. HQs buildings. Great times!
  • Was a baker here from early '78 to late '80. Had a great time with my brothers and loved all those late night chow hall burger runs and BBQ's.
  • Arrived there in Jan. of 64. Left in May of 64 with B-1-7 for Okie. I looked at the may and it looks like the barracks I was in is still there. I remember we had a fire one day because of the oil heater. Made a mess of everything. It cost a quarter to ride the bus to Oceanside. I remember "Sheep shit". The px was small. Barbershop had sign that read, "Officers First". But I also remember an officer came in after me and said go ahead. The theater was an outdoor type with wooden benches. Absolutely no fast food places. Did my time, went to college on the GI bill and had a good life. I'll never forget Las Pulgas. Does anyone remember the yellow dance line at the Oceanside USO. You couldn't touch the girl unless you were across the yellow line on the dance floor. Those were the days. Semper Fi.
  • Straight out of boot camp to here in Fall of '64; left for Okinawa on the George Clymer (sp.) in Spring of '65. Good memories. I was a 2532, Radio Relay.
  • During the Cuban Crisis, Oct 1962, as part of Co H 2nd Bn, 7th MAR, I sailed on the APA 27? George Clymer, through the Panama Canal, then stood off the Cuban Coast. I did get liberty in Port a Prince, Haiti, and made a landing on Viegas PR. We then returned to Camp Las Pulgas. I was discharged from there in 1963.
  • Served with Battery "E", 11th Marines, 1982-1983. Then I rotated to Okinawa, with Battery "D", 12th Marines.
  • Never forget La's Pulgas. Was there from Apr. 63 -summer 64 as Golf Co 2/7. Spent a lot of time training (remember "Lock On???) before sailing for Okie and Camp Hansen as Lima Co. 3/9 and eventually good ol' sunny Danang in Mar '65.
  • Hoping to find info on a Marine stationed at Las Pulgas in the early 80's . Corporal Mike Tan in Bravo company. Always wanted to apologize to him for me being a coward and an idiot. If you know him, please let him know, he'll know who "Kay" is ( I moved back to the midwest). Best/worst years of my life were in southern Cal. Definitely a lifetime of memories.
  • I was in Pulgas from Jan 86 to Jun 89. Hotel 3/11 Comm. Loved it.
  • Served with Fox Battery 03-06 lived in pulgas and flores. good times
  • Served as a PFC in Wire Comm. Echo Battery, Las Pulgas, 1985. We had some awesome soccer/rugby games at the field. Went to 29 Palms for field op. A small piece in time. Wish I could go back!
  • I was with Charlie 1/11 from May of 84 until August of 85 when I was sent to Fox 2/12 for one year. When I came back I was with Alpha 1/11 and Charlie for a bit until I eas'd in February of 88. Some of these names look familiar.
  • looking for mike battery 3/11 83-84
  • Cy Quinn I served with Delta Co.,1st Batt 7th Regiment from 1956 thru 1958. Anyone on this site remember Bob Ivens, D J Murphy, Jose Gonzales, or anyone from that unit ?
  • Delta 1-11 for a cup of coffee in 1983. Can't remember his name, but I loaned a guy from Pantego, Texas, $50 about a week before I shipped out. Never got paid back. By my calculations, with compounded interest, he owes me about 10 grand. But if you're that guy and you remember borrowing $50 from a guy from Mansfield, Texas, look me up...I'll take 50.
  • I was stationed there in a 105 battery in 1969-1970. Our barracks was next to the small gym and library. Seem to remember a fair size grinder, then admin offices to the south. NCO club was just west of us. You could get 10 cent Oly draft during happy hour. I think there was counter-motor radar next to us. Used to climb the hill to the gun park and motor pool most days. Someone mentioned the impact area east of the camp where jets made runs. Those were generally part of "field grade" shoots to show field grade officers what type of ordance they had when they went to RVN. I was short in mid-1970 and all I did was take a 105 out and shoot a bunch as part of those shoots. I remember running the dusty tank trails during pt tests. The mess hall was pretty crappy. I took a gun crew up to Edward's Air Force Base once to let them practice loading it. We ate at their enlisted mess hall and thought we had gone to heaven. Even had glass plates. Not a metal tray in sight!
  • I enjoyed reading your comments. I was at las pulgas from '76-'79. India battery. this post brings a lot of memories back. I remember be on guard duty for thirty days at a time. I also remember those who lived in the "hotel" barracks. our battery was in the old single story barracks right next to the third battalion mess hall.
  • I served with sgt. shriver [3531] in india battery 3/11!
  • I was with I-3-7 from 57-59 and came back to Las Pulgas after Vietnam with the 13th Marine Regiment -5th Division do not recall how many visits I had to "sheep shit" but had to be one to many
  • I was a 1345/3521 with MTM and EMC from 1994-1999. Cpl. Cofran!
  • Yes
  • Do you remember Pancho? I was with I 3/11 , I keep in touch with him.
  • Cpl D. Coulter at Los Pulgas 67-68 in squad bay on the grinder right across from the duty NCO hut. Col DD Ezel was CO. Chow was terrible and the mess hall was filthy. NCO club has frozen pizza and that was about it. Still have dreams about that place on occasion.
  • Arrived Las Pulgas spring of 1963 right out of TVR schools Bn. First duty station was H&S company. Transferred to B Co. 1st tanks early 1965. Married my girlfriend May 1965. Left for nam that same month. Still married to my best friend, will always remember the quansit huts, the out door theatre, and the cold rides to mess hall 9 miles away. Sometimes I want to go back. Semper Fi. Sam (salty) Soltysiak. Email 10acresnahoe@gmail.com
  • Was at Camp Las Pulgas from Apr. of '63 until possibly May of '64 when we left for Camp Hansen Okinawa & eventually Danang Air Base. Las Pulgas was, at that time, home to the 7th Marines. I was in G Co., 2/7. My greates memories are the outdoor theatre, the pool behind our barracks, and that horrible hill (???) we called "Sheep shit" that so many of us had to hump due to minor infractions. The memories, however, are all good.
  • I was with Echo Battery back in Aug 73 to Dec 74 assigned to the comm unit. I was a wireman. Good bunch of guys there, Ron Corbin, Hernadez, Hassenstab, Baugermiesher, George Mason, Butch Smith. William DeWitt. Would like to here from you all. Mike
  • Sam; I was in B Co 1st Tanks-1959-Aug 1963..was a "2531" radio operator for the company & CO driver. Yeah, I remember the huts and the chow ride. What about guard duty at the tank park..at nite.

  • Cpl Jim Kubiak HQ 1/11 S-4 Sept. 1977 to July 1979. Major Crane was in S-4 and Can not remember the Gunny in S-4. Cpl. Grover was down on the other end of the building S-1 maybe?? Wish I could remember everyone...been some time. Now live in Arizona.
  • Was with 2/11 0811 canon cocker from 1990-1992.
  • Man, you guys are Newbies! I was stationed at this camp during 1969 - 1970 when it was a training area for troops heading to the "Nam". You should have seen it then. 24/7 weapons firing, MCAW bomb drops at the end of Basilone Road, tank travels heading through the base enroute to the repair stations, and minimal but workable living conditions. It was my home, and it was great!
  • I was at Pulgas in 1966...On our way to Nam...I remember the Slide for Life across a very wide river...
  • 79-80 Maintenance Battalion 1st FSSG. I was an 1142.
  • Cpl Maxwell?
  • Cpl Maxwell? I remember you!
  • I remember staging at Las Pulgas before going to Nam in 1969. Actually, all I remember is cold nights in an unheated quonset hut and humping Sheep Shit twice a day with all the gear. Fuck Sheep Shit!
  • 88-92 C 1/11 R 5/11 - Desert Storm HQ 1/11 Cpl. Lloyd Years later i ran into Shit Sandwich (Czeslovich) at S.F. Airport. He was an Dept. Corrections Air Transport Marshall of all things and put on about 25 lbs of weight/muscle. I was travelling for my I.T. Job and we just kinda walked past each other a few paces then turned around like ...wtf?
  • I was in fox 2/11 from 1993 till 1997
  • I served in hotel btry 3/11 in 1976 43 area the fleas then it was a 105 howitzer btry I've heard they have moved to ,29 palms the stumps wow
  • I was stationed with M 3/11 back in 1977-1979. I was just out of basic and most of the Marines there were Vietnam Vet hard-asses. I just looked at this map and and barely recognize any of Las Pulgas as I remember it. Back in 1977 the Barracks we were living in had already been condemned for over 20 years. No A/C! 2-4 Marines per room. Few single Marines had a TV in their room. Back then we watched The Sonny and Cher Show, The Waltons and M*A*S*H. I was with Motor T as an Explosives Driver but once I was done humping 155mm ammo for the 0811s I liked to hang with them and the 155s during fire missions. We were at 29 Palms all the time it seemed. My barracks room was just South of where the Chow Hall seems to still be but those new barracks/Hotels look a lot nicer and more plush than we had it. For phones we had two pay phones that you lined up to use on the weekends (for me) and you called collect. No cell phones back then. You also took a bus or hitched a ride with buddies to go to into Oceanside or wherever as most of us boots didn't have cars. There were no commercial restaurants. you ate at the Chow Hall, Roach Coach or grabbed something at the small PX we had back then. Honestly I can't say I miss the place but I have some fond memories of my fellow Marines. Do they still make you pull Guard Duty and make you walk around the Motor Pool, Howitzer Ramp, PX and Church (and other places) like they did back then? I hated Guard Duty! Semper Fi!
  • Was at 43 Area Las Pulgas from October 1975-1979 C Btry 1/11 0811 and went to HQ 1/11 Sept. 1977. Lived in the Barracks that had 4 people to a room and the head in the middle. In Sept. 76 we moved to the new Hotels. That was Luxury back then. Thank God I did not have to ride the bus into Oceanside. Had a White 73 Camaro...use to tear up the streets a little...MP's got me few times. So much has change in 40 years. Should have stayed in longer but.. Good times..And remember the phone booths over by the PX. Semper Fi.
  • Was at Las Pulgas from 62-63-Then off to Embassy duty. I thought everyone lived in Quonset huts and rode in six by's to chow out to the tank park. I thought everyone froze their ass sitting outside watching movies. My t-o weapon was a M-1 and my gear was strictly WW2 and Korea.Semper FI
  • I was in F2/11 and in 2003 they had our battery living in the same type of barracks. We called em the crack houses. Gotta love community bathrooms. Only good thing about was it was real easy to steal cable!
  • I was stationed at "The Fleas" from 82-84. What a super bunch of jarheads in HQ Btry, Communications Repair Facility. Schmitty, Fasbender, Gilbert, "Spletz", Stu Ginsberg, "Wally", Gunny Schofield, & Top Kruger. Many other great marines. The wire men and radio operators were great guys, as well.
  • Jerry Stam I was stationed at ammo Co 1St FSSG 1st Supply Btn. 1978-79.
  • Cpl. Wright 1988- 1990 Fox Battery 2/11 some of my best memories in the Marine Corps. Great friends like Jones, Martinez, Harvey, Monroy, Smith, Dorch, Andy, Ramali, Sabatino. The list goes on. I remember hanging out in Ocenside and at the Beach and I can't forget the times we went into Mexico. Being young and a Marine is priceless.
  • Scott Sullivan (Sully) I was with Lima 2/11 from 81 to 84. I was the gunner on a 55 battery, lost a lot of my hearing in both ear and now wear hearing aids. I have some good memories of my time in, but overall did not enjoy military life too much. I did some really crazy shit like going to TJ on acid, and getting into a few fights hear and there. Got a few page 11s but never lost any rank and got out with an Honorable Discharge! I would love to hear from some of the guys I server with like: Ron Bulter, Gary Crews, Rich Warning, Richard Vasquez, Rory Shultz, Davis Eng. Please drop me a line at: scottps41@hotmail.com
  • Went up Sheep Shit many a times 1966
  • When I was there in 1964 and 1965 it was the home of the 7th Marines before we went to Vietnam. We loved climbing sheep shit in the rain.
  • I was with MOTOR TRANSPORT MAINTENANCE COMPANY from 1978 to 1980. Just a kid then....would like to go back and check it out.
  • I was there with 1St Replacement Co Unit 134 Staging Bn. in March of 1966.We were on our way to Vietnam. We had to run up Sheep Shit many times, and later on force march up it a few times wearing full combat gear, all that while being "Hung Over".I'm 68 now and wonder if I could still do that stuff today. We also had to spend a day in the mock up POW Camp that the USMC had set up near Las Pulgas, to give us an idea of what captivity would be. The USMC was forced to shut the mock up POW Camp down not long after we were in it, because of maltreatment allegations in the press.
  • Killer Alpha...lol
  • I was 0811 with M 3/11 1976-1978 the off to OKI with m 3/12 1978-1979 back with M 3/11 1979-1980, lots of time at 29 stumps

  • Was here in the early 90’s LCpl Harris - Welder while there with Range Control. I helped build the flag pole that was placed at unit HQ.
  • I was HQ,3/11/Comm. from 1974 -1976.
  • Do you remember a Cpl. Lucas?
  • Served with HQ Battery from November 1985 to December 1988. Proudly served as the Unit Diary Clerk and was able to spend a lot of field time at 29 Palms where I was able to be just one of the other Marines. I spent a lot of time on the gun line and admired all the hard work and dedication it took to work on artillery gun. I really loved Las Pulgas and the running trails that surrounded the camp. Came pretty close one time in getting run over by a stampeding buffalo herd that roamed the base. Can't forget either the NCO club where they made the best burger ever...the Sgt. Major Burger. I have competed in the Oceanside Half Ironman Triathlon a few times over the years and the bike portion goes right pass the camp. A few changes but looks pretty much the same. Regards mates.
  • I was in HQ battery 1/11 in 1984 to 1985. I was the BN S-3 clerk then went to Alpha btry.
