Ochamchira (Abkhaz: Очамчыра, Ochamchyra; Georgian: ოჩამჩირე, Ochamchire; Russian: Очамчира, Ochamchira) is a seaside city on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia, Georgia, and a centre of the eponymous district.
Ochamchira also witnessed drastic population decline after the War in Abkhazia. Once a small maritime settlement that witnessed fighting between Russian and Turkish-Abkhaz forces in 1877, the population had grown to 18,700 by 1978. But ethnic cleansing of Georgians in 1992-93 left Ochamchira in the grip of abandonment. While some people remain, most of those affected by the conflict have never returned.
The ancient Greek colony of Gyenos (Greek: Γυένος) is supposed to have located near Ochamchire, though the identification cannot be considered as definitive because of doubts as to the actual location and the very poor preservation of the archaeologic site itself.
