church, 1947_construction, Modern (architecture)
Modernist church building completed in 1947. Designed by Ralph C. Colyer & Maurice R. Salo (of the firm of Magoon & Salo), it is clad in red brick. At its east end, near the top, there are three columns of doubled black square tiles, and attached to the wall to the right is a bronze statue of Isaiah symbolically turning swords into plowshares. Further west, the facade is set far back, with a set of stairs leading to a raised plaza area (it extends behind a brick wall to the right). There are four very tall, narrow windows on the facade and a tall column of more doubled black square tiles at the west end. Below the eastern three of these windows are three brick-framed doors. The lower level of the facade juts out below the western window to the sidewalk, with a small entrance below a circular window.
The origins of the church extend back to 1825, taking its present name in 1919. After completion of its new building on 35th Street, the church also acquired the four brownstones immediately to the west, which were dedicated as the John Haynes Holmes Community House and now house the adult education programs, a shelter for homeless men and many more church and community activities. The church's organ was installed in 1954.
