Batkun Fortress (Patalenitsa)

Bulgaria / Pazardzhik / Septemvri / Patalenitsa
ruined castle, archaeological site, invisible, ancient ruins

The Roman and Medieval Fortress of Batkun or Batkounion is located at the southwestern edge of the former village of Batkun, since 1955 a neighborhood of Patalenica. Only a few remains of walls are readily visible on the surface, but the fortress had round corner towers, two churches, and an aqueduct. It occupied a strategic location, overlooking the valley to the north. Batkounion is mentioned in relation to battles in 1189 and 1199, and is believed to have been destroyed during the course of the Ottoman Conquest in the 1370s. In the eastern part of the site is a ruined modern youth hostel.
