A district of East London in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets which in the 16th century was a suburb used for industries such as tanneries, breweries and slaughterhouses which weren't welcome in the city centre. During the Victorian era it became largely a poor slum where in 1888 Jack the Ripper committed five unsolved murders. It was also here that the Salvation Army was formed and Joseph Merrick, the "Elephant Man", was discovered.
