Approximately 10,092,000 tons of rock for building the Canso causeway was quarried from a mountain on Cape Porcupine. The quarry is currently operated by Martin Marietta Materials Canada Ltd and produces crushed stone, which is loaded onto barges and deep sea ships for transport to markets in the US eastern seaboard.
