Rock of Ages Quarry

The only remaining active granite quarry in Barre, and the only supplier of monument-quality "Barre Gray" granite, after more than 150 years still the most widely used variety for monuments and tombstones.

Notice the piles and dumps of waste rock around the pits. In dimension stone work often 90% of the stone goes to waste for every 10% sold. With softer stones the waste can be crushed and sold as sand and gravel. This granite too hard and abrasive for most such uses.
