Former Site of the Green Cove Springs Reserve Fleet

USA / Florida / Green Cove Springs /
 military, United States Navy

Following the end of World War Two the US Navy was faced with a massive surplus of warships and a lack of storage space for the ships being deactivated and placed into reserve in the post-war years. During 1946 & 1947, the US Navy began construction of this pier complex at NAS Green Cove Springs to supplement the river anchorages already in use for the storage of Destroyer Escorts (DE's) High Speed Transports (APD's) and various types of Amphibious Landing Ships which were no longer needed in the peacetime US Navy.

At its peak the reserve or 'mothball' fleet at NAS Green Cove Springs held over 600 ships at its docks and in the river anchorages. When the US Navy began to consolidate its reserve fleets in the 1960's & 1970's to three locations the ships at Green Cove Springs were removed and either towed to Fort Eustis Virgina, Beaumont and Orange Texas, sold for scrapping or used as targets for live fire excercises.

Today the pier complex is used for a variety of commercial and industrial purposes.
