Mandarin is an upper-middle-class neighborhood near at the Southern limits of Jacksonville. It used to be an independent town, but was absorbed into Jacksonville in 1968.

The Mandarin neighborhood was traditionally limited to the area immediately surrounding the Mandarin Peninsula. However, many real estate developers have started calling areas well outside this boundary "Mandarin" because of the positive neighborhood image.

In 1867 the famous author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe bought a house here. For the next seventeen winters, she welcomed tourists debarking from the steamers making their way down the St. Johns River and charged them 75 cents each to meet her and admire her surroundings.

Comments

  • I lived in Mandarin for 20 years, and it's definitely not upper-middle-class as a majority.
  • It's the wealthiest part of the county.
