Named after Captain F. Blaney – who was posthumously awarded the George Cross for his deeds in defusing bombs. On the 20th October an unexploded bomb fell in Park Avenue, East Ham. It had two very dangerous time fuses, which was rare and constituted a very real danger. Captain Blaney personally defused this bomb – it was his usual practice to work alone on these occasions.

Again on 13th December 1940 he was called to remove the fuse from an unexploded bomb in Romford Road. As usual he crawled into the crater to tackle it himself, but the bomb exploded and he lost his life, but saved countless other lives in the process. He was aged 30 when he died. There is a memorial plaque in Blaney Crescent in tribute to his memory.
