NPL, as it was known, was established in 1906 with the installation of a 5kW transmitter and small wooden operations building. It supported the early radio experiments of Lee DeForest aboard the USS Connecticut during the Great White Fleet Dec 1907-Feb 1909 world tour. Although the experiment was a failure, the Navy continued to experiment with radio and built a worldwide chain of high-power radio transmitting stations, including NRTF Chollas Heights which was commissioned in May 1917.
In 1942, it became part of the Navy Radio and Sound Laboratory until it was decommissioned in 1949. Buildings and features remaining of the station are considered for inclusion for the proposed Navy Radio and Sound Historic District.
