place with historical importance, edifice
The New Customs House was constructed of limestone and was built between the 1856 and 1860. The imposing structure was designed by architect William Thomas and features a symetrical facade, a portico and a large dome. When the building was erected, customs revenue provided a main source of revenue for the Colonial government and the design of the building signified the importance of the role played by the customs office. The building was originally located at the water's edge, but now is some distance from the river because of infilling.
