The Nuclear Weapons Storage Area at Loring AFB was once operated as a separate, top secret facility. Originally called Caribou Air Force Station, the remote area to the northeast of Loring’s property was the first U.S. site specifically constructed for the storage, assembly, and testing of atomic weapons. Absorbed into Loring Air Force Base in June 1962, the WSA continued to supply, maintain and store the ordinance carried aboard the base's assigned wings of B-36 Peacemaker and later to the B-52 Stratofortress'.

Encircled by a parallel ribbon of four fences, one of which was electrified, the WSA contained multiple layers of security, leading to the "Q Area" which contained the hundreds of nuclear weapons stored onsite. Today the majority of topside buildings and fencing have been removed and the bunkers themselves have been abandoned.
