The memorial is dedicated to Malaysia's 2nd Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak bin Hussein (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tun_Abdul_Razak). It was set up in October 1961 to preserve all the documents, library materials, personal belongings, and artifacts belonging or relating to the late Prime Minister. This building which is also known as Sri Taman, was his official residence until his death in 1976 due to leukemia. It was occupied later (1978-1981) by Tun Hussein Onn (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tun_Hussein_Onn), Malaysia's 3rd Prime Minister.
The memorial was built as an appreciation of Tun Abdul Razak's contributions to the development of the nation and its people. Tun Razak is fondly remembered for his rural development programs, and his sense of social justice. He is also renowned for launching the Malaysian New Economic Policy which successfully transformed Malaysia from being one of the poorest nations on the planet, to the highly industrialized, with absolute poverty in the population as a whole dropped from 52.4% in 1970 to 6.8% in 1990. Malaysia's GDP per capita grew only 31% in the early 1960s but under Tun Abdul Razak's rules, it grew a mind blowing 358%, but the growth scaled back sharply to 36% in the late 1980s after his death.
In spite of a brief tenure, many attributes of Malaysia economic progress were due to Tun Abdul Razak's handiwork. He single handedly charted the economic development of the nation – the after-effects of which are felt and witnessed to this day. Many townships spruced up during his time. The country embarked on an "agriculture revolution", which saw it becoming the world's largest producer of rubber and palm oil, while another natural resource – petroleum – was exploited to the maximum, with the setting of Petronas (www.petronas.com.my/) which today ranked among Fortune Global 500's largest corporations in the world. The electronics industry also saw tremendous growth, with Malaysia becoming a main manufacturer of electronic components. Due to his economic genius, he was bestowed the title 'Father of Development'. Many of Tun Razak's legacies are relevant even until now. No doubt they will endure long into the future.
