Established, in 1938, Alexandra Hospital was built by the British to serve military needs.

In February of 1942 during the Battle of Singapore of World War 2, and in retaliation for retreating Allied soldiers engaging them from the hospital, Japanese soldiers entered the hospital and murdered an estimated 50 patients and medical personnel before taking around 200 prisoner.

The captives were then lead to buildings about a quarter mile away from the hospital, where groups were put into cramped rooms and left overnight without food, water, or proper ventilation. Some did not survive the night.

In the morning, after promising the POWs water and fresh air, bayonet wielding Japanese soldiers systematically executed the rest of prisoners.

Today, the hospital serves the public of Singapore, after having been renovated in 2000.
