Louisville & Nashville RR predecessor Nashville & Chattanooga opened a branch line to Tracy City in 1856. At the time it was the steepest RR grade in North America. Track crosses over the mainline just at the entrance to the Cowan Tunnel. L&N successor CSX abandoned the line in 1985. Much of the roadbed is scheduled to become hiking trails.
