Historically, South Pittsburg was a landing point and base for Union gunboats and transport steamer ships in the US Civil War. Gunboats based here, participated in lifting the seige of Union General Roseccrans' forces trapped in Chattanooga.

South Pittsburg is now better known as a notorious speed trap on US Highway 72. Speed limits drop from 65 to 35 in less than a 1/4 mile stretch entering town from the west. The posted signs are difficult to see due to placement on blind curves.
