The Unisphere was built by United States Steel as its contribution to the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. It is actually built out of stainless steel. The empty interior and grid supporting the continents was intended to show how closely related all parts of the world are, in keeping with the Fair theme mentioned in the dedication plaque: "Peace through understanding". Same site as the Trylon and Perisphere at the 1939-1940 World's Fair.
The exterior was used as a filming location for S2E7 of the TV series "Blindspot".
