Chufut Kale means "Jewish Fortress" in Crimean Tartar. This city was built in the 6th century by Alans-christians with help of Byzantine Empire under the name of Fuli and later occupied by Karaites, a turkic people practicing a form of Judaism, mixed with Islam and early Christianity.
Medieval name of the city was Kyrk-Or (Forty Towers) or Kyrk-Yer (Place of Forty).
