The Fertitta Center is a multipurpose arena located on the campus of the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. It is home to the UH Cougars men's and women's basketball teams and the women's volleyball team, and from 1971 to 1975 served as the home of the NBA Houston Rockets.
Opened on December 1, 1969, the Center was named after Mary Hofheinz, a UH alumnus and the wife of Judge Roy Hofheinz. The court is named after legendary men's basketball coach Guy V. Lewis; an alcove is dedicated to former UH star Elvin Hayes.
In addition to sporting events, The Fertitta Center has also served as a concert venue.
Over the years The Fertitta Center has undergone extensive renovations. A new ceiling, lighting, and sound system were installed in 1991. In 1992, the basketball locker rooms were enlarged and equipped with personal lockers for each player, along with a meeting area and a lounge. In 1998, a ring of 28 luxury boxes were added to the top of the seating bowl, reducing the capacity to 8,500 from the original 10,000. A new Conor Uni-Force flooring system was installed in 2004.
A proposal was unveiled by UH officials in June of 2010 to raise funds for a total renovation of the 40-year old facility, including two new practice courts, office suites for the men's and women's basketball and volleyball programs, team academic/video rooms and space for sports medicine and sports performance.
Renovations to the facility began in March 2017 at the conclusion of the 2016–17 basketball season. Work was completed by the start of the 2018–19 men's and women's basketball seasons, at which time the facility was renamed Fertitta Center, in honor of Tilman Fertitta, a UH alumnus who is also chairman of the UH Board of Regents.
