St. Ladislas Chapel (site)

Romania / Sibiu / Albert Huet Square
chapel, archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages, demolished, draw only border, historic ruins, 15th century construction, 13th century construction

Chapel built early 15th century on older foundations (13th century ?), believed by older historians to be dedicated to St Jacob, today proven the chapel was dedicated to St Ladislas.
The chapel was first documented in 1415, being mentioned the existence of the cemetery chapel dedicated to St. Jacob (today it is believed the chapel was dedicated to St Ladislas), the patronate right being given by the Pope to one of vicejudges in Sibiu named Jacob. The chapel was rebuilt in the 15th century and in 1592 the comite Albert Huet, whose name was later given to the square, established here a school library, which operated since 1380.
The chapel with adjoining buildings was demolished in summer 1898, during a uninspired campaign to modernize the city, thus losing many monuments of medieval origin.
During the 2005-2006 archaeological diggings, the partly preserved chapel foundations have been uncovered and marked on the pavement.
