park, gate, entrance, interesting place, historic remains

These gates once stood at the carriage entrance to the Cornelius Vanderbilt mansion on Fifth Avenue between 57th and 58th Street (where Bergdorf Goodman is today). The gates were on the 58th Street side and were donated to the city by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in the 1920's when the mansion was torn down. The gates, executed in Paris, as well as the mansion were designed by George B. Post.
