 mosque, UNESCO World Heritage Site

Due to the growth of the city, the emir Rahman II decided the first enlargement of the mosque. The construction started in 833, and ended in 855, under the mandate of the son of Rahman II.
To do it was demolished the original qibla wall, whose remains are now visible as pillars, and continued into eight sections, with a total length of approximately 26 m. Architectural elements are identical to the initial phase, alternating yellow limestone and red brick in the arches. The mihrab, whose foundations were found in the basement of the Chapel of Villaviciosa, was conceived with a monumental arched entrance supported by four columns.
Also this emir conducted an intervention in the yard, closing with saqqifas the sides were missing.
