Córdoba | city, capital city of state/province/region, former national capital

Spain / Cyrdoba /
city, capital city of state/province/region, former national capital

Cordoba is a city in Andalusia, Spain, the capital of the province of the same name, located in a depression on the banks of the Guadalquivir River at the foot of Sierra Morena.
Today it is a city of moderate size, however, the old town contains impressive architectural memories of when Cordoba was the thriving capital of the Caliphate of Córdoba, which at the time controlled almost all of Iberia. It is estimated that in the tenth century Cordoba had a population of 500,000 inhabitants, at the time making it the second largest city in the world behind Constantinople.

Cordoba has been the birth place of three great philosophers: the Roman stoic Seneca, the Jewish philosopher Maimonides and the Muslim philosopher Averroes. Also born in Cordoba were the poets Lucano, Juan de Mena and Luis de Góngora, and more recently artists Paco Pena Flamenco, Vicente Amigo and Joaquin Cortes.
Cordoba aims to be European City of Culture in 2016.
