Coinciding with the splendor of the Caliphate in the tenth century were conducted the most extensive interventions in the mosque.
They break down the wall of the qibla of Abderrahman II, which remains are also visible today, and extended the oratory into twelve bays more in the southern direction followed so far.
Other developments are the double qibla wall, which facilitates the connection with the Sabbath, and that allows the mihrab to be not limited to a single niche; it opens as a small octagonal room covered with a dome-shaped shell. The front of the mihrab and domes that precede it, are covered with mosaics executed by Byzantine craftsmen sent by basileus loaded with three hundred twenty quintals of tiles.
