In operation since 1938, GM's Tonawanda Engine Plant has produced over 70 million engines for cars and trucks built by GM. Currently, the plant produces the Ecotec 2.0L Turbo and 2.5L (4-cyl.) engines for the Chevrolet Malibu and Impala, the Buick Regal and the Cadillac ATS and CTS. The plant recently launched an all-new family of engines – EcoTec3 4.3L V6, 5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 engines, for the Chevrolet Camaro, Malibu, Colorado & Impala, Buick Regal, GMC Canyon & Cadillac ATS, CTS & CT6. The plant is also the exclusive provider of the standard 6.2L LT1 V8 engine for the 2014 Corvette Stingray and 2016 Cadillac CTS-V.

The Tonawanda plant also made engines for the export market, with the model 235 I-6 and model 265 V8 being the most numerous models sent overseas. Primary customers included General Motors Continental, located in Antwerp in Belgium and General Motors of Brazil, with factory in Sao Caetano do Sul, São Paulo. Each of these engines were all readily recognizable with a letter "T" in their serial number, indicating their Tonawanda origin.
