Portland Castle was built by Henry VIII during his reign of 1540. The fortress was built to protect Weymouth against possible attack from the armies of France and Spain.

Built with Portland stone, this 450 year old Tudor fortress remains intact and is now under the care of English Heritage.

Portland Castle is the surviving one of a pair - its partner, Sandsfoot Castle having largely fallen into the sea on the other side of the harbour.
Henry the VIII built the fortification and it was in use on and off until after WWII.
It is open to the public, with free admission to members of English Heritage.
See real cannon and garde-robes. During summer months there are re-enactors who relive the life of Tudor soldiers manning the fort.
