A peninsula (though almost an island) near Weymouth in Dorset. Permanently connected to the mainland of Dorset by a substantial shingle beach (an extension of Chesil Beach).
Location of many of the portland stone quarries (mainly now closed) where stone cladding for important buildings in some of the large British cities was obtained.
