It's a protected area by Ramsar Convention (surface : 5,000 hectares) being located between Calarasi and Cuza Voda. The site has an outstanding importance for 271 species of sedentary and migratory water birds, as well as several species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, including species endangered at a national, European and global level. Human uses include fishing, aquaculture and farming.
