House Sommer (Berlin)

Germany / Berlin / Berlin / Pariser Platz, 1

The House Liebermann and House Sommer are located directly to the right and left of the Brandenburg Gate. The original buildings were destroyed during the Second World War and reconstructed between 1992 -1999 according to plans by the Berlin architect Josef Paul Kleihues following a classicists model. In contrast to the previous buildings, the two new structures have an additional floor and stand closer to the two gate buildings. The Brandenburg Gate is thus able to retain its independence while at the same time maintaining the closed form of the Pariser Platz. Kleihues conceived the two houses as twin buildings yet gave them individual elements on their facades. Haus Summer belongs to the Rhein Mortgage Bank (Rheinische Hypothekenbank) who uses the ground floor for exhibitions. Haus Liebermann is named after the Berlin painter Max Liebermann who lived and worked here starting in 1894. Since March 2000, the "Brandenburg Gate" Foundation of the Berlin Bankggesellschaft (Berlin Bank Society) have had their headquarters here. Haus Liebermann hosts a variety of "Gate discussions", conferences and exhibitions presented by the foundation.
