VMI is a 4 year senior military college in Lexington Virginia. It hosts ROTC units from the US Army. US Navy, US Airforce, and US Marines. The corps of cadets fought decisivly in the battle of New Market during the American Civil War.

The Institute is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where it is designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
