Established in 1749, Washington and Lee University is one of the oldest institutions in America.

Originally named Washington University, the name was changed to Washington and Lee University in the 1880s to reflect the connection to former General Robert E. Lee, who served out his days as the President of the University.

The historic core of the university is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where it is designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
