This is actually the second lighthouse on Alcatraz. The first lighthouse was built in 1852 and was the first lighthouse on the west coast of the U.S. However, it was damaged in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and had to be replaced. It was automated in the 1960s and functions to this day.
