This channel which is dredged to 45' at MLW includes a naturally-cut 90' deep hole off the Egmont Key lighthouse. During the Spanish-American War it was much shallower, once refered to as "the puddle" compared to its companion Southwest Channel, and anticipated as the sneakier back entrance to Tampa Bay. Now it is part of the main shipping channel.
The Egmont Key lighthouse still operates, but a better system of entrance is the powerful white mirrored range towers (one taller off of north pier, and one lower on the shoal) which light-up green at night.
