The Tempodrom is in the Mockernstrasse in Berlin on the site of the former Anhalt station. A Mecca of alternative music and theatre culture, the Tempodrom was inaugurated on May 1, 1980 in West Berlin, in a circus. It changed location several times until the architectural firm GMP (von Gerkan, Marg and Partner) from Hamburg built a sort of large white tent, 38 m high, in 2000-2001. It houses an arena that can hold 3700 people and a smaller room of 470 seats. It has an ecological function: it saves and recovers heat and recycles the rainwater.
The foundation stone was laid on May 21, 2000 and the theatre was opened with the ceremony of European Film Awards on December 1, 2001.
In the complex Templodrom is included the pool of "Liquidrom."
