Current excavations of major 9th-10th century Bulgarian Orthodox monastery with church and scriptorium (two-story bulding with a footprint of 40х10 m; some masonry vaults still standing covered by frescoes; 60 iron styluses found along with numerous lead book clips, pottery, etc.), most likely endowed by Knyaz Boris I (who perhaps used it as his monastic retreat and was buried there) and headed by one of the disciples of Sts. Cyril and Methdius. Important centre of the Preslav Literary School.
