  • The name 'Lakhimpur' comes from Kalita king Laksminarayan, who flourished sometimes in late A.D. 14th century. A few suggest that it comes from 'Bhuyan Queen' -Lakhimi. Yet there are fresh claim over the terminology. This area was once under the Chutiyas, Kundis, Kalitas, Bhuyans, Ahoms and Koch. Lakhimpur was a part of ancient ----Uparipattana, Kundi, Kundil, Sadhayapuri, Halali, Dimalang and Saumara etc. The first Tai-Ahom king Chaolung Siukapha founded one of his initial capitals at North Lakhimpur i.e., at Habung, a plenty of plain lands. Siupungmung @ Chakradhvajsimha founded the medieval town Manipore here. Ancient relic sites are: Malinithan, Ghuguha Dol, Harhi Devalaya, Basudeva Than, Nahar Ati etc. Lakhimpur region had Buragohain and Bargohain Bilats of the Ahom kings. Today Lakhimpur is a district head quarters and district name. The famous inscriptions of Sadhvanarayan, Prataksanaraya, Laksminarayana are found near Lakhimpur. This region is famous for activities of Vaisnavite Gurus Sri Sri Madhavadeva and Aniruddhadeva also Ahom kings Siukhampha, Deoraja, Chakradhvajsimha, Koch king Naranarayana and General Chilarai. This region was once under the Kalita kingdom and ruled by Subali, Padmanarayan, Premnarayan, Jaynarayan, Sadhaknarayan, Prataksanarayan, Laxminarayan and others since beginning of A.D. 13th century. They ruled up to Mayapur (Itanagar). The Kalita kingdom is referred in Gurucharita in the part of life of Mathura Das Ata of Daitari Thakur. The important copper plates recovered from this area belongs to Laxminarayan and Pratksanarayan dated A.D. 1399 and 1403.
